Often we learn about the past by being forced to read textbooks.
Governments and war stories filled the pages, but I never really understood what really went on 'way back then'.
I have recently tried reading some historical fiction novels. These books have opened my mind and have motivated me to look up historical events, governments and wars. I guess I am a sucker for social history, and the stories of those who have lived through significant events trigger my curiosity enough to delve into the more traditional historical writings.
Here's a great way to discover more about history in an online setting (just in case the library is closed :)) http://www.exploratorium.edu/
Ms Turner turned me on to Abundance, Sena Jeter Naslund and as a result I LOVE reading historical fiction, especially about the Tudors and try and keep up with the TV show.
Any historical fiction fiends out there? I'd love to dig into a different country and/or era.
